Eduard Meyer’s explanation of these representations (in Ägypten zur Zeit der Pyramidenerbauer, p. 19): “(Right, above) the gravemound of Osiris, bearing his name and with stalks growing out; (below) the closed tomb, with the tree beside it, upon which sits Osiris’ soul in heron form, as phoenix; (left, below) the corpse of the god in the coffin, supported and shaded by an immense tree, while Isis and Nephthys stand mourning nearby; (above) the corpse, sprouting grain and watered by a servant.”
